Dr. Elser was born and raised in Ohio. She attended the University of Findlay where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology with a minor in Chemistry. She then completed veterinary school at The Ohio State University.  After earning her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, she entered active duty service in the Army Veterinary Corps as a captain.  She served for five years as a Veterinary Corps Officer in Virginia and Hawaii where she traveled throughout the pacific and to Antarctica. After her active duty service, she matched with GCVS as a Diagnostic Imaging Intern. She then attended the University of Pennsylvania where she completed her radiology residency and became a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Radiology. She stayed on as a Lecturer at the University of Pennsylvania before returning to GCVS.
