Depending on what brings your pet to the ER, our emergency teams may manage the entire visit. In other cases, we may determine that your pet would benefit from the expertise of one of our veterinary specialty services.

So, when does emergency veterinary care become specialty care? And what happens if a specialist isn’t immediately available? Here’s what pet owners can expect.

What Does an Emergency Veterinarian Do?

Think of your pet’s emergency team as the team focused on what needs to happen right now.

When your pet arrives at the ER, we’ll assess them based on the urgency of their condition. Depending on what your pet needs, our team may recommend diagnostic testing, medications, pain management, monitoring, or other treatments.

Just like in human medicine, veterinary emergency rooms use a triage system, which means pets with the most critical or life-threatening conditions are treated first. At GCVS, our emergency team is available around the clock to evaluate, stabilize, treat, and monitor patients.

Sometimes, that’s all a pet needs. Other times, the emergency team may identify a condition that requires more advanced or specialized care.

When Might a Pet Need a Veterinary Specialist?

Our board-certified veterinarians, also known as veterinary specialists, have advanced training focused on particular areas of medicine. Across our GCVS hospitals, Emergency and Specialty teams work together to help patients whose conditions may require advanced diagnostics, specialized procedures, or expertise beyond their immediate emergency needs.

Specialty services vary by hospital and schedule, so your next step will depend on your pet's needs, the specialty involved, and where that service is available.

Needing specialty care doesn’t mean the Emergency team’s role suddenly ends. Instead, it may mean another team with expertise specific to your pet’s condition becomes involved in the next stage of their care.

Will My Pet See a Specialist Right Away?

Not always—and this can be an important discussion for pet owners coming through an emergency hospital.

While GCVS Emergency service operates 24/7, our specialty clinicians see patients during their regularly scheduled hospital hours. Certain advanced tests and procedures also require the involvement of the appropriate specialist, which means they may need to take place when that specialty service is available.

So, if your pet comes to our Houston emergency room overnight or during a weekend, they may not immediately transition to a specialty service.

But that doesn’t mean their care is on hold.

What Happens While My Pet Is Waiting for Specialty Care?

A lot can happen behind the scenes before a specialist becomes involved.

During emergency-only hours, our doctors and nursing teams can evaluate your pet, address immediate medical needs, provide treatment and monitoring, perform appropriate diagnostic testing, and begin treatments that shouldn’t wait. They can also communicate with our specialty teams when appropriate and start planning what your pet may need next.

When possible, our Emergency and Specialty teams also consider what can be done ahead of time so your pet is better prepared for the next stage of care.

For pet owners, this may feel like a waiting period. From a medical standpoint, however, your pet’s Emergency team is continuing to care for them while determining the safest and most appropriate next steps.

What If My Pet’s Condition Changes?

Emergency medicine can change quickly, and so can your pet’s treatment plan.

If your pet needs an urgent procedure or another immediate intervention, our emergency team can respond to that need. If a particular diagnostic test or procedure is more appropriately performed by a specialist, the emergency team can continue caring for your pet and keeping them stable and comfortable until that service is available.

That’s also why recommendations can change throughout an ER visit or hospitalization. New test results, changes in your pet’s condition, and additional information can all influence what the care team recommends next.

How Do Emergency and Specialty Veterinarians Work Together?

One benefit of an emergency and specialty veterinary hospital is having different areas of veterinary medicine work together.

The transition from Emergency to Specialty isn’t necessarily a hard stop where one team’s involvement ends, and another’s begins. Teams may communicate, and Emergency may perform diagnostics ahead of time or start treatment that helps prepare your pet for specialty care.

The goal is to make that transition as coordinated as possible while continuing to address your pet’s immediate medical needs.

What Should I Ask My Pet’s Care Team?
