Dr. Canning earned his bachelor’s degree in biology from Vanderbilt University and proceeded to earn his doctorate in veterinary medicine at Auburn University. During the veterinary curriculum, Dr. Canning realized his passion for dermatology and embarked on a several-year journey to become a veterinary dermatologist. He completed a dermatology internship at Gulf Coast Veterinary Specialists and then a dermatology residency at the University of Pennsylvania.
After two years of practicing veterinary dermatology in Cincinnati, Ohio, Dr. Canning decided to return to Houston and rejoin GCVS. He is delighted to be back in such a large and diverse city as Houston. Within the field, Dr. Canning is most interested in providing long-awaited and well-deserved answers for pets who have struggled with skin or ear diseases. As a dermatologist, he possesses the knowledge and expertise to help patients who have otherwise been plagued by constant and frustrating symptoms.
Outside of the hospital, Dr. Canning enjoys exploring local museums, science centers, and the zoo, as well as spending time at home with his family and pets.
