Surgery – Operating Room Technician

Gulf Coast Veterinary Specialists is a referral only veterinary specialty practice that provides the highest quality and most comprehensive specialized care for companion animals through various specialized departments to customize care to our patients and their pet families.

We currently have openings on our surgery team for motivated and passionate veterinary technicians that are eager to learn and move beyond general wellness care. The operating room technician(ORT) must be able to work in a large team environment, manage multiple tasks simultaneously, be eager to learn the “whys” behind skills and be adaptable to quickly changing situations. The main job duties for this position include anesthesia induction, maintenance and recovery, surgical preparation of patients, circulating in the ORs, sterile assisting during surgical procedures, IV and arterial catheterization, pharmacology and calculations, pain management through various modalities, medical record keeping and pre and post-operative patient treatments.

Our ORTs work alongside our board-certified team of anesthesiologists and surgeons to provide advanced surgical and anesthetic care to our patients. The ORTs will utilize multiparameter patient monitoring equipment, endoscopic equipment for arthroscopy/laparoscopy/thoracoscopy, portable and fixed digital radiography units, anesthetic ventilators and point of care laboratory tests. The ORT will train across all surgical procedures offered including soft tissue, oncologic, orthopedic, arthroscopic, laparoscopic/thoracoscopic and total joint replacement. Shift availability: Monday-Friday 8-hour shift afternoon to late evening, or Wednesday- Saturday 10 hour shift 8am-7pm. This position has periodic on call duties for afterhours emergency surgery requiring arrival within 1 hour.

Requirements: Applicant must be reliable, able to work in a team environment, adaptable to quickly changing situations, and a self-starter. Good patient restraint and a loving disposition with animals is a must. Previous kennel assistant or entry level veterinary assistant  experience is preferred.

Education/licensing:

This position requires a high school diploma (or equivalent) and associate/bachelor’s degree in veterinary technology. Applicants must be a Texas Licensed Veterinary Technician or obtain Texas LVT status within 1 year of employment. Out of state license transfers must obtain a Texas license within 6 months. Recent graduates are encouraged to apply.
