Hospitalist

Gulf Coast Veterinary Specialists (GCVS) is looking for a qualified Hospitalist to join our team of emergency doctors and specialists to assist in providing excellent in-house patient care. The hospitalist will work closely with the emergency doctor team, assisting in the intake and management of hospitalized patients and facilitating transfers to the appropriate specialty service as needed. The hospitalists will be responsible for managing hospitalized emergency patients, creating and recommending treatment plans, maintaining and updating medical records and communicating with clients. The hospitalist will communicate with specialists and facilitate transfers to specialty services as needed.

Hospitalist responsibilities:

Hospitalist will engage in full-time attendance during their scheduled shift to receiving transfers from the emergency veterinarians that require hospitalization. Patients may be transferred the same day to specialists or the following day. Patients may also be discharged by hospitalist on the following day.

Hospitalist will receive minor follow up appointments that come through as “same day emergencies” as well as low acuity same-day emergencies. These will be the “fast track” emergencies.

Provide Excellent patient care

Create and recommend treatment plans

Update patient information in medical records with the latest findings and treatments

Order diagnostic tests for health care staff to administer

Review and interpret test results

Prescribe pharmaceuticals based on diagnostic results and physical exam findings

Respond to questions from patient owners regarding their care and well-being

Discuss patient lab results with owners

Work with both emergency doctors as well as specialists to provide optimal patient care

Provide timely discharge summaries (24 hours) to referring veterinarians and provide referring DVM updates

Attend daily rounds

Requirements:

DVM or VMD licensed to practice veterinary medicine in the state of Texas

Active DEA license

Minimum of 5 years of practice experience

Excellent verbal and written communication skills
