Critical Care/ICU Supervisor

Do you have a passion for patient care and managing a team of highly motivated individuals? We have an opening for a supervisor for our intermediate/critical care units, supervising a team of 40+ individuals with the assistance of a leadership team. This is an on-the-floor position overseeing patient care and assisting with training, so strong technical background is necessary. We hospitalize a variety of patients, from post-op surgical patients up to critical table patients, so you will always have the opportunity to learn something new! We have a total of 16 specialties that you will work closely with to oversee and manage their hospitalized patients, including our avian and exotics team.

We are looking for an individual who excels in interpersonal relationships, as you will be working with not only your direct reports but most of the leadership in the hospital—strong emotional intelligence and situational awareness a must. Summary: It is the responsibility of the ICU/IMC Supervisor to be a positive role model for all staff while overseeing all aspects of the ICU, IMC, and critical care departments. They will aid the Clinical Staff Manager in deciding how all standards and results required of the departments are reached. The ICU/IMC supervisor will manage ICU/IMC staff schedules, perform employee coaching and development, and delegate duties and responsibilities to the ICU/IMC staff as needed. They will also assist in providing quality, compassionate care for all our clients and patients. The ICU/IMC Supervisor must have good communication skills and a strong professional relationship with all staff to perform the work as delegated and produce quality results. Intimate knowledge of the day-to-day functions of the departments, patient care, and client service skills are a must. This position requires a dependable, high-energy person who can handle multiple tasks at one time and in a high-stress environment.

Job Relationships:

A. Responsible to the Clinical Staff Manager.

B. Responsible for ICU/IMC and critical care patient care staff.

C. Works closely with the leadership teams for any admitting departments and other department supervisors.

D. All GCVS employees.

Essential Functions:

A. Core competencies: Interdisciplinary leadership, team building, performance improvement, communication, systems thinking, negotiation, multitasking, and financial acumen; in concert with the ECC Supervisor.

B. Operationally and administratively accountable for technical staff of ICU/IMC and critical care.

C. Maintain a minimum of 80% direct support of the technical staff.

D. Identifies and articulates the vision and strategic direction for the discipline of Critical Care and collaborates to implement operational strategies/initiatives to achieve them.

E. Promotes and utilizes a patient-centered approach within their department.

F. Works with the Clinical Staff Manager to implement and maintain the development of strategies to promote the recruitment, retention, and recognition of excellence in assigned departments, including oversight and recommendations regarding compensation and benefits programs for staff.

G. Leads in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of new protocols and processes, assuring appropriate resources for care delivery.

H. Staffing: Maintain staffing and oversees scheduling to complete goals of the ICU/IMC and critical care patient care team.

I. Creates win-win solutions among diverse needs and expectations.

J. Possesses excellent medical staff and clinical relationship development skills.

K. Participates as an active member of the departmental Leadership Team.

L. Maintains knowledge of current trends and legal requirements in areas of responsibilities by reading journals, newsletters and attending educational meetings.

M. Works with the Clinical Staff Manager to develop annual departmental and capital budgets, monitors and analyzes ongoing performance and productivity, and implements necessary corrective plans.

N. Maintains department records and files.

O. Serves on internal and external workgroups, committees, and agencies as appropriate.

P. Maintains knowledge of principles and processes for providing exceptional client services. This includes evaluating client needs, meeting quality standards, providing an exceptional client experience, and evaluating client satisfaction.

Q. Performs other responsibilities as requested by the Clinical Staff Manager.

Job Requirements:

A. Job allows employees to vary physical position or activity for comfort.

B. Must be able to:

a. Stand 60% or longer of an 8-hour workday.

b. Walk up to 50% of an 8-hour workday.

c. Sit 40% of an 8-hour workday.

d. Requires ability to lift up to 10 pounds continuously.

e. Requires employee to bend, squat, kneel and reach above shoulder level frequently. Climb and twist occasionally.

f. Requires repetitive use of hands for simple grasping and fine manipulation

g. Requires all sensory skills (speech, vision, smell, touch, and hearing) corrected to near normal range.

h. Environment: 1. Greater than 90% of time spent indoors. 2. Temperature and humidity norms indoors. 3. Exposure to cleaning agents.

i. Exposure to high-stress levels.

j. Exposure to electrical current.

Qualifications:

A. Licensed Veterinary Technician in the state of Texas.

B. Current clinical leadership experience in the discipline of direct reports.

C. Training and Experience: Five years progressive experience in veterinary leadership. Also, prefer previous experience with Risk Management and Safety.

D. Adapts positively to the ever-changing healthcare environment by supporting technology and process changes.

E. Ability to empathize with others and demonstrate a values-based work style is required.

F. Must possess excellent listening and interpersonal skills and problem-solving methods.

G. Must be able to work varying hours as required.

H. Must have basic computer skills including working knowledge of Office software.
