Avian and Exotics Supervisor

Gulf Coast Veterinary Specialists is currently looking for a dynamic and experienced supervisor for our growing Avian and Exotics department. GCVS has over 50 veterinarians and veterinary specialists across fourteen specialty practices. Our Avian and Exotics department sees a mix of referral, emergency, and general practice appointments for our exotics patients. While a background with avian and exotics is not required for the right candidate, technical veterinary background and anesthesia experience is a must. Summary: The Avian and Exotics supervisor’s responsibility is to be a positive role model for all staff while overseeing all aspects of the avian and exotics department. They will help the clinical staff manager decide how all standards and results required of the departments are reached. The supervisor will manage employee schedules; perform employee coaching and development, and delegate duties and responsibilities to the departments’ staff. They will also assist in providing quality, compassionate care for all our clients and patients. The Avian and Exotics supervisor must have good communication skills and a strong professional relationship with all staff to perform the work as delegated and produce quality results. Intimate knowledge of the department’s day-to-day functions, patient care, and client service skills are a must. This position requires a dependable, high-energy person who can handle multiple tasks at one time and in a high-stress environment.

Job Relationships:

A. Responsible to the Clinical Staff Manager.

B. Works closely with the Leadership Team for Avian and Exotics and other department supervisors.

C. All GCVS employees.

Essential Functions:

A. Core competencies: Interdisciplinary leadership, team building, performance improvement, communication, systems thinking, negotiation, multitasking, and financial acumen.

B. Operationally and administratively accountable for technical and client service staff of Avian and Exotics.

C. Identifies and articulates the vision and strategic direction for Avian and Exotics’ discipline and collaborates on the implementation of operational strategies/initiatives to achieve them.

D. Promotes and utilizes a patient-centered approach within their department.

E. Works with the Clinical Staff Manager to implement and maintain strategies to promote the recruitment, retention, and recognition of excellence in assigned departments, including oversight and recommendations regarding compensation and benefits programs for staff.

F. Leads in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of new protocols and processes, assuring appropriate resources for care delivery.

G. Staffing: Maintains staffing and scheduling to complete goals of the Avian and Exotics support team.

H. Creates win-win solutions among diverse needs and expectations.

I. Possesses excellent medical staff and clinical relationship development skills.

J. Participates as an active member of the departmental Leadership Team.

K. Maintains knowledge of current trends and legal requirements by reading journals, newsletters and attending educational meetings.

L. Works with the Clinical Staff Manager to develop annual departmental and capital budgets, monitors and analyzes ongoing performance and productivity, and implements necessary corrective plans.

M. Maintains department records and files.

N. Serves on internal and external workgroups, committees, and agencies as appropriate.

O. Maintains knowledge of principles and processes for providing exceptional client services. This includes evaluating client needs, meeting quality standards, providing an exceptional client experience, and evaluating client satisfaction.

P. Performs other responsibilities as requested by the Clinical Staff Manager

Job Requirements:

A. Job allows employees to vary physical position or activity for comfort.

B. Must be able to:

a. Stand 60% or longer of an 8-hour workday.

b. Walk up to 50% of an 8-hour workday.

c. Sit 40% of an 8-hour workday.

d. Requires ability to lift to 10 pounds continuously.

e. Requires employee to bend, squat, kneel and reach above shoulder level frequently. Climb and twist occasionally.

f. Requires repetitive use of hands for simple grasping and fine manipulation

g. Requires all sensory skills (speech, vision, smell, touch, and hearing) corrected to near normal range.

h. Environment: 1. Greater than 90% of time spent indoors. 2. Temperature and humidity norms indoors. 3. Exposure to cleaning agents.

i. Exposure to high-stress levels.

j. Exposure to electrical current.


A. Licensed Veterinary Technician in the state of Texas.

B. Current clinical leadership experience in the discipline of direct reports.

C. Training and Experience: Five years progressive experience in veterinary leadership. Previous experience with Risk Management and Safety preferred.

D. Adapts positively to the ever-changing healthcare environment by supporting technology and process changes.

E. Ability to empathize with others and demonstrate a values-based work style is required.

F. Must possess excellent listening and interpersonal skills and problem-solving methods.

G. Must be able to work varying hours as required.

H. Must have basic computer skills, including working knowledge of office software.

I. Demonstrates the core values and mission statement of Gulf Coast Veterinary Specialists in their day-to-day activity.
