What is a Diplomate of
the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine?
A diplomate has earned a DVM or VMD
degree from an AVMA accredited college. She or he has then dedicated 3
to 6 years of their professional career to advanced training in
veterinary medicine. Veterinarians who have successfully completed
ACVIM’s rigorous training and testing requirements are certified as
Diplomates, and have earned the right to be called Board-certified
specialists in veterinary internal medicine.The amount of
training an ACVIM Board-certified specialist is required to have goes
far beyond the technical aspects of veterinary care. Training includes
an extensive amount of time dedicated to all aspects of cardiology,
neurology, oncology and internal medicine.The American
College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM) was established in 1973
and has more than 1,400 active members. It is the recognized specialty
college responsible for establishing training requirements, evaluating
and accrediting training programs, and examining and certifying
veterinarians in the veterinary specialty of Small Animal Internal
Medicine, Large Animal Internal Medicine, Cardiology, Neurology and
Oncology.
What is a Veterinary
Neurologist?
Neurology is the
branch of medicine that treats diseases of the nervous system, the
brain, spinal cord, nerves and muscles. This encompasses such common
problems as epilepsy, slipped disks, spinal and head injuries,
meningitis, and cancer of the nervous system. A specialist is a
licensed veterinarian who has been certified by the American College of
Veterinary Internal Medicine to specialize in Neurology.First they complete
a 2-3 year long residency training program which must fulfill strict
guidelines set by the ACVIM. Following this training, the aspiring
Neurologist must pass a series of examinations covering all aspects of
general medicine and neurology. Most veterinary neurologists are also
trained in neurosurgery.
