There are many causes of ear infections.  Some of the most common causes include allergies, parasites, abnormalities of the skin, and anatomical (breed-related) abnormalities.

Most infections begin in the outer ear.  If these infections are not treated properly, they may spread to the middle ear, which then requires aggressive medical and sometimes surgical treatment. Gulf Coast Veterinary Dermatology & Allergy is able to offer “top-of-the-line” service in the diagnosis and treatment of ear disease which includes:

  • Veterinary Dermatologists that specialize in ear disease.

  • A video-otoscope which allows visualization of the entire ear canal, ear drum, and occasionally the middle ear.  Through this video-otoscope, we can take samples, clean the ear and apply medications.  This scope also enables us to take pictures of the ear canal and ear drum, which assists in monitoring response to therapy and in explaining ear disease to our clients.

  • Expert Veterinary Radiologists that perform and evaluate radiographs (x-rays), CT scans and MRI’s.  These diagnostic techniques aid us in determining the extent of the ear disease (i.e. whether or not there is involvement of the middle ear), prognosis, and the best form of treatment for each individual patient.
